BigTrends Functions and Features

5) View

This menu, located across the top of BigTrends, displays a list of options for hiding the Favorites column (located to the left of the chart screen), and the Toolbox (located to the right of the chart screen).

  1. Favorites bar - The Favorites column is located on the left side of the charting screen. This option is used to hide or unhide the Favorites column.

  2. Toolbox - The Toolbox has a suite of drawing and pointing functions for use in the chart window. Clicking on the Toolbox option opens and closes a vertical bar down the right-hand side of BigTrends. The vertical bar can also be closed by clicking on the "X" at the bottom of the bar.

    B.
    Pointing Functions
The pointing functions available are Pointer and Cross. When a feature is being used, it will be indented. To begin or end use of a particular feature, click on the feature with the left mouse button. Clicking on another drawing or pointing feature will also end the use of a particular feature.

Pointer: This is represented by a vertical line. The pointer isolates a specific period of time with a vertical line. The price and technical information for that period will be displayed at the bottom of the chart window.

The pointer can be moved across the screen by clicking and dragging the mouse, or simply by clicking on the mouse to specify a new location. The pointer can also be scrolled using the arrows keys on your keyboard.

Cross: This function utilizes a vertical and horizontal line to form a crosshair. The period isolated by the vertical line will be displayed on the bottom of the chart window along with the price or technical information targeted by the horizontal line.

The cross can be moved across the screen by clicking and dragging the mouse, or simply by clicking on the mouse to specify a new location. The cross can also be scrolled in any direction using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

    C.
    Drawing Functions
The drawing features available are Support & Resistance, Trendline, Rectangle and Retracement. Click on the appropriate icon to use one of the features. All drawing features have the following functions:

To use a drawing function: Click on the appropriate icon. The function will be indented when in use. Click on the icon again, or click on another icon to stop using that drawing function. Once you used the drawing function, it is automatically switched off. You will have to click on the icon again to use the function.

To highlight a drawing: Click on the drawing you would like to highlight. When the drawing can be highlighted there will be small circles on the ends or corners. To un- highlight the drawing, move the mouse away from the drawing and click the mouse.

To move a drawing: Click on a highlighted drawing and drag it to its new location. After the new location has been selected, move the mouse away from the drawing and click the mouse to un-highlight. With the Trendline and Rectangle, individual ends or corners can be moved/rotated by clicking on a specific circle.

To erase a drawing: Highlight the drawing you would like to erase and click on the "Trash Can" icon toward the bottom of the Toolbox bar. Erased drawings cannot be restored.

Zooming in or zooming out will alter the size or dimensions of the drawing accordingly. All drawings are erased when the ticker symbol or time period is changed.

Support & Resistance/Horizontal Line: This icon is represented by a horizontal line, and using this feature forms a horizontal line across the entirety of the chart window. Multiple horizontal lines can be used, and will remain unless moved or erased.

Trendline: This feature allows you to draw lines on the chart being viewed, and is represented on the Toolbox bar by a pencil drawing a line. You can draw multiple trendlines.

Rectangle: This rectangular icon allows you to isolate particular areas of the chart.

Retracement: This icon is represented by four horizontal lines. When used, this will create a set of five horizontal lines, with the top and bottom connected by a diagonal line. These are also referred to as Fibonacci Retracements. The principle behind this function is that after a stock moves upward or downward, the price will often retrace or correct some of this movement. Often, the amount of retracement will correspond to one of the horizontal lines. The five horizontal lines represent percentages of 100%, 62%, 50%, 38% and 0%, with 62 and 38 being Fibonacci numbers. The top line is conventionally place at the peak and the bottom line at the valley and trough. The diagonal line points in the direction of the price movement.

  3. Chart Properties - You can change several of the properties of the chart window in the Utilities menu by clicking "Chart Properties." In the resulting window, change the color of the chart by selecting from the following options in the drop-down menu labeled "Color Theme": Black, Dark Gray, Light Gray, White. You can also change the price scale of the chart. The two options available are linear and logarithmic. In a linear scale, distances on the vertical axis represent equal net changes. In a logarithmic scale, distances on the vertical axis represent equal percentage changes. See http://bigtrends.iqchart.com/partner/bigtrends/education/patterns_linear.asp for a visual explanation. Click "Apply" to make any changes before closing the window. Click "OK" to make any changes while closing the window. Click "Cancel" to close the window before making any changes.
